Overview.

Part 2 of 2 of the "Common Full Ring Poker Mistakes" video series by James "SplitSuit" Sweeney (here's Part 1). This second video tackles two main mistakes and concepts in FR cash games:

  1. Cold Calling
  2. Hand Classes

1) Cold Calling.

Cold Calling is when you simply call a preflop raiser before the flop. This is a horrendously big leak for absolute beginners, but it can still cause problems for beginner/intermediate players that are playing break-even or winning poker.

SplitSuit looks at the 4 main types of hands that most players are tempted to cold call with, discussing the pros and cons of cold-calling with each group of hands. This section essentially covers when and when not to cold call preflop. This strategies are then reinforced by 5 common hand history replayer examples.

This cold-calling section also contains a quick note on using your database (i.e. tracking software like PT) to help you determine whether or not your cold calls are costing you money (and what you can do about it if you are).

2) Hand Classes.

Hand classification is not a commonly discussed topic in poker strategy. It basically involves classifying your hand as one of 4 different classes, each having a different objective and plan of action:

  1. Value hand
  2. Showdown value hand
  3. Bluff hand
  4. Semi-bluff hand

Any hand in any given situation in Texas Hold'em poker can be placed in to one of these 4 classes. SplitSuit gives an overview of using hand classification during play and explains why using this hand class framework is beneficial to your game (or harmful if you do not have an understanding of it or use it).

This section concludes with 4 hand history replayer examples of how classifying your hands throughout a hand will help you to make more profitable decisions.
